Most courses on how to be a financial advisor will give you plenty of advice on how to manage money, how to interpret markets, and how to get your clients to make decisions you feel are in their best interest. If you’re looking for a financial course that only focuses on these issues, you’re in the wrong place.

If you hadn’t noticed from the title, this blog is about something that at first seems entirely unrelated to your financial practice. You might be asking yourself if I’m looking for financial advisor best practices, why in the world would I need to think about how healthy I am physically?

I’m here to tell you, there’s a direct correlation. If you truly want to be the best advisor you can be, if you want to be a guide and a counselor for your clients and have other advisors look up to you, if you want to build that seven figure business we like to talk about, you need to take a look at your physical health.

Why You Need to Focus on Your Physical Health

It will give you the energy and focus you need to do your job. This topic has a lot of relevance to me because I used to be a much unhealthier version of myself. I was addicted to caffeine, ate a ton of fast food and sugar, and needed a nap nearly every afternoon. I was still successful, yes, but I had no idea how much I was limiting myself by adhering to this unhealthy lifestyle. When I made a commitment to change my diet and increase my fitness level, everything changed. I no longer needed naps, I found I could focus better on what my clients were telling me, I had the energy to learn more and improve in other areas of my life. I simply became a better person, and this made me a better advisor. If you’re living an unhealthy lifestyle, you are not at the top of your game in your career. That is a fact.

You can set an example for others in your life. As advisors, we depend on others listening to us and seeing us as an expert. It’s difficult for that to happen when it’s clear we aren’t striving to be the best versions of ourselves. You might think that being overweight or unhealthy has nothing to do with how much you know about financial matters, but it does. When you make bad decisions in any part of your life, it affects how much people trust the advice you’re giving. Be an example of how becoming the best version of yourself leads to success and happiness. You’ll be amazed at how much everyone around you begins to listen to what you have to say.

You can become a source of encouragement and information for clients.  When your clients listen to the advice you’re giving them about money management and retirement, they will start to look to you for other advice. When they see you living a healthy lifestyle, you can naturally begin coaching them on how to make life changes so they can see the same results. The more you can guide clients in all parts of their lives, the more mutually beneficial your relationship will be.

It’s not crazy to think that a focus on healthy eating and fitness will lead to an improvement in your business and a higher level of success. In fact, when you think through it, it’s probably one of the sanest and practical suggestions you’ll find in my course.
